Man allegedly bit cop’s ear off during tussle on highway

A man channeled his inner Mike Tyson this week, chomping off part of a cop’s ear during a scuffle on an Ohio highway, according to a report.

Cornelius Carey Jr., 44, was walking along a Lorain County Highway around 6:45 a.m. Thursday when a woman called police, fearing he’d get hit by a car, Cleveland.com reported.

State Highway Patrol trooper Lance Deshuk found Carey about a half hour later. He asked Carey for his ID, but when Carey dug in his jacket pocket instead of allowing the officer to look for it, the cop tried to stop him, dashcam video shows.

Then Carey struck Deshuk in the face, knocking him to the ground and starting a scuffle that ensued off camera.

At some point during the tussle, Carey bit off a piece of the officer’s ear, according to the report.

Another woman called the sheriff’s office to report the wrestling match in the middle of the road, the outlet reported. Still a third caller said Carey put Deshuk in a chokehold, but the wounded officer still managed to get him under control and in handcuffs.

Additional officers also arrived to help the trooper.

Carey faces a felonious assault charge in connection to the incident, according to the report. He was ordered to be taken to a medical facility for a full blood screening. The results will remain sealed from the public due to privacy laws.

The trooper was hospitalized and awaiting immediate surgery, according to court records obtained by the outlet. He is recovering at home as of Friday morning, according to The Chronicle-Telegram.

Carey has a history of unprovoked violence against police officers, according to the report. In May, he allegedly pushed a police officer and threw a beer bottle at his chest. He may also be dealing with mental health issues — as he was a patient of a behavioral and mental health services facility in June 2010, the outlet reported.

His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 22.
