Disturbing video shows cops charging raccoon with squad cars until they finally kill it
An upstate New York police department is under fire after video surfaced of officers targeting a raccoon with their squad car — claiming the doomed critter died as “humanely as possible.”
A video posted to Facebook by Bryanna Catucci shows two vehicles — including a marked Coeymans police SUV — driving directly at the animal several times Monday in the parking lot of a shopping plaza in Ravena, according to Catucci.
“Leaving the grocery store to find 2 cops charging at a raccoon in a car for 15 minutes until dead:/ you would think if it had rabies they would shoot him instead of torturing. Sad day,” Catucci wrote.
In the video, one of the vehicles is seen clipping and injuring the animal. Witnesses told News 10 ABC the officers continued for 15 to 20 minutes, before one of the cars ran over and “finally did a number on the raccoon.”
In a statement on their Facebook page, the Town of Coeymans Police Department claims the animal was rabid and that they chose to end the animal’s life as “humanely as possible.”
“On March 12 we received numerous calls about a rabid raccoon in faith plaza. The raccoon had attempted to get into the establishment at one point. Our officer’s [sic] did find the raccoon, but it was not in an area that was safe to discharge a firearm due to the proximity of pedestrians and residences. They dispatched the raccoon as quickly and humanely as possible.”
A police spokesperson could not immediately be reached.
