ABC can’t stop gushing about ‘Roseanne,’ ‘American Idol’
What’s old is new again — well at least if you’re an ABC TV programming executive.
On Tuesday, ABC touted the success of reboots of “Roseanne” and “American Idol” — to go with the rest of its programming slate.
“Roseanne,” a late-1980s hit about a working-class family, has averaged more than 19 million viewers in its rebooted form.
“The last time we had the No. 1 show was 24 years ago,” said Ben Sherwood, president of Disney/ABC Television Group at the company’s Upfront presentation at Lincoln Center in New York. “If anyone came to play a drinking game for how many times we mention ‘Roseanne,’ you’re welcome.”
The network also plans to air three hour-long dramas created or produced by Shonda Rhimes.
Rhimes, the force behind “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal,” is ending her 15-year career at ABC Studios and picking up to go with Netflix.
But her legacy will live on at ABC, which will continue with “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Station 19” (a “Grey’s” spinoff) and “How to Get Away with Murder.”
ABC said it will launch three new comedies and five new dramas, including “Single Parents” and “A Million Little Things.”
